Air-to-water heat pumps (aerotermia)

An air-to-water heat pump draws energy from the outside air to give you heating, cooling and hot water from one system. In our mild climate it works especially well.

How much does an air-to-water heat pump cost in the Marina Baixa?

An air-to-water heat pump with a hot water cylinder for a house or villa in the Marina Baixa usually costs between €7,000 and €13,000 fitted, including VAT. It provides heating and hot water and, with underfloor heating or fan coils, cooling too. In the mild coastal climate it performs very well, giving three or four kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity.

Who it's for

It's the choice for villas and houses in Sierra Cortina, Altea Hills or Polop Hills that want to move away from heating oil, bottled gas or an electric water heater. New builds often come with it planned in.

How it works

The heat pump warms water that runs through underfloor heating, fan coils or low-temperature radiators, and part of it goes to the hot water cylinder. In summer the same system can cool through fan coils.

With solar panels

If you have, or plan to add, solar panels, the heat pump uses the electricity you generate and running costs fall even further. We size it with both systems in mind.

How much does it save against oil, gas or electric heaters?

Because it delivers three or four times what it uses, a heat pump typically costs a third to a quarter as much to run as electric radiators for the same heat. Against heating oil or bottled gas the saving depends on fuel prices, but in homes used all year the investment usually pays back within a few years, and sooner with solar panels.

Where we fit

We're a good fit if you have a house or villa with underfloor heating, radiators or room for a hot water cylinder. For an apartment without water-based heating, a heat-pump split or multi-split is usually more practical.

Frequently asked questions

Does an air-to-water heat pump work in an apartment?

It can, especially with underfloor heating, but it needs room for the outdoor unit and the cylinder. In most coastal apartments an air-based system makes more sense.

Can I keep my existing radiators?

Sometimes, if they're low-temperature or large enough. We work it out at the survey.

What servicing does a heat pump need?

One check a year: circuit pressure, filters, the cylinder's anode and cleaning the outdoor unit.

What size hot water cylinder do I need?

As a guide, 150–200 litres for two or three people and 250–300 litres for families or villas with several bathrooms. We size it to real use, especially if the house is let.

Too hot at home?

Send us a WhatsApp with a photo of the room and we'll tell you which unit you need and what it costs.
